A 25 Motif Challenge második menete után ideje visszatérni a magyar nyelvű blogoláshoz. Nagy meglepetésemre van rá igény (legalábbis így értettem itt), és ez roppant jólesik. De minthogy tudom, hogy többen olvasnak már angolul is, ezért minden bejegyzés kétnyelvű lesz.

After the second round of the 25 Motif Challenge my blog is going to be bilingual. Tatting is not a widely known craft in Hungary, so I started to write in English in the firm belief that it didn’t matter. But I bumped into a Hungarian needleworking group in the Internet, and it turned out that they were reading my blog and keeping their eyes on my work. It made me so happy!

Piros és fekete függő – Red and Black pendant

Ruzsenoár, hogy mindjárt két klasszikust is idézzek (a helyes megfejtők között 10 db ingyenes, korlátlan kommentálási lehetőséget sorsolok ki).

A kis medál egy fülbevaló része volt, nagymamámtól kaptam, amikor én még kislány voltam, vagyis elég régen. De nem nagyon hordok fülbevalót, viszont szeretem ezt a kis tűzzománc medált, ezért gondoltam, lényegüljön át függővé. Ez az egyik változat. A másik majd másmilyen körítésben fog újjászületni, de még nem tudom, hogy.

The little enamel medallion was an earring originally. The earrings were Christmas presents from my Grandmother when I was about 9, I don’t remember exactly, but it isn’t important anyway. Usually I don’t wear earrings, because I have pale, round face, and I look funny with earrings. (Imagine the full moon with earrings...) But I just love those little medallions, so I made this pendant. Nothing special, zig-zag chain and a beaded mock ring.

Napocska – Sun

Az első alkalom, hogy kipróbáltam, milyen körbehajócskázni egy karikát. Hát nem mondom, hogy ez volt az utolsó alkalom is, de annyira nem ragadott magával a technika. Elneveztem Napocskának és fellógattam a kisfiam ágya mellett.

It was the first time I tried to tat around a ring. It was only a test, I’m not sure if that’s the right way to make it. I called it Napocska (Sun with a diminutive – Little Sun, maybe), and hung it up at my little son’s bedside.

Wild roses medallions from Forty Original Designs in Tatting by Nellie Hall Youngburg (p. 8.) My first try with variegated threads. Actually the grey one is not made of variegated thread, it just looks like. (Very bad photo, sorry)

Motif #23

A Latin cross (Julie Patterson's Hearts and Flower Cross Bookmark) from here.

Motif #24

A Greek cross-pendant. It's a well-known basic motif, I followed the descripition of Nellie Hall Youngburg (Forty Original Designs in Tatting p. 4.), and added the beads to the motif.

Motif #25

Leaf-pendant. I found this extremely beautiful pattern in the Priscilla Tatting Book (No 3, p. 14). Well, it is a small part of a bigger centrepiece. I added a nice glass bead to it, and now it is my favourite pendant.

Kaptam egy jó nagy adag, virtuális limonádét! És az külön nagy öröm, hogy éppen KicsiKatótól, akinek a munkáit folyamatosan ájult áhítattal nézegetem.

Most az van, hogy a szabályok értelmében tovább kellene küldenem tíz másik bloggernek. Hát én most kaptam először ilyesmit, és nagyon kedvesnek és megtisztelőnek találom, de tudom, hogy van, aki nem szereti, esetleg már unja is a sok virtuális díjat, meg ilyeneket. Szóval, KicsiKató, köszönöm, nagyon kedves, hogy gondoltál rám! Baby socks actually, little gift for my 2 years old niece. The tatting isn't too complicated, but sometimes the less is more, isn't it?

Motif #17-19

As you can see I haven't bothered to hide the ends of the threads, because it will be easier to sew these medallions onto lavender bags in this way. The small rings on the chains are Josephine rings. It's funny, Vinnie had a similar idea, but of course my trifles can't compare with her beautiful doily.

Well, originally it's a small detail of a fabulous vintage collar from the Priscilla Tatting Book I. I tatted it for my sister-in-law, I hope she will like it.

And from my kitchen actually.
This motif is so simple, almost boring (not almost – it IS boring), that I don’t mark it with a number in my 25 Motif Challenge.

The main thing is the thread. My very first hand-dyed thread! In my teenage years I dyed fabrics. I loved to dress like a hippie, the batiqued skirts were my favourites. So about the thread. There is no denying it, it was a failure. I used natural paints, rosehip and very strong (almost illegally strong) black tea. The result is miserable. It looks simply dirty… But I don’t give up! Next time I’ll try the beetroot.
I tatted this string with the hand-dyed thread to decorate the Birthday Gift for my Dad. The gift itself was the jar, I mean the contents of the jar, a… umm… interesting mixture of honey, nut, garlic, star anise and clove. I know it sounds yukky, it looks yukky, and, well, it tastes yukky. (I know what you are thinking now, but you are wrong. I really like my Dad!) According to a gastroblogger this mixture is beneficial in an influenza period. Because of the honey and the garlic, presumably. The honey is antiseptic and antibacterial, while the garlic makes you stinky, so nobody wants to get closer to you, thus you can avoid the infection.

As I promised here is the photo of the whole doily from the mentioned old Hungarian patternbook.

And here is the description of the pattern.
You need 2 shuttles, thread size 60. (According to the book. I used size 20.)
* Ring 5 ds, 5 p sep by 5 ds, 5 ds, cl. RW.
Chain (1st shuttle) 6 ds, 3 p sep by 6 ds, 6 ds, join to 4th p of the ring. RW
Ch (2nd shuttle) 6 ds, 3 p sep by 6 ds, 6 ds, join to 2nd p of the prev.chain. RW
Ch (1st shuttle) 6ds
R (2nd shuttle) 5 ds, 3 p sep by 5 ds, 5 ds, close
Ch (1st shuttle) 6ds, p, 6ds
R (2nd shuttle) 5 ds, 5 p sep by 5 ds, 5 ds, close
Ch (1st shuttle) 6ds, join to 2nd p of the prev.chain.
Ch 6ds, p, 6ds join to the next p of the prev.chain.
Ch 6ds, p, 6ds join to the 3rd p of the first large ring.
Repeat from * 5 times. Six of this element make a medallion. The first p of the first chain of every element should be joined to the p of the last chain of the prev. element.
The whole doily is composed of 7 medallions and 6 ring (5 ds 9 p sep by 5 ds, 5 ds, cl). Connecting the medallions you have to omit one of the bigger outer rings. Maybe it doesn’t make too much sense, but please consult the photo.

Motif #14
The motif is from an old needlework patternbook. (However it's a little bit weird to describe it as an old book, the book is exactly the same age as me...) Actually this medallion is just an element of a bigger doily. I was going to tat the whole doily for the birthday of my mother-in-law, but for the lack of time I had to choose another, less complicated pattern. But I like this medallion, I will use it as a coaster. It looks good with my favourite teacup!

Wind of Change

Looking for tatting patterns I dipped into a lot of blogs and I rather enjoyed them. Then I joined eTatters (as you can see), and found a lot of other blogs and tatting bloggers. It suddenly dawned on me: all of the things I like in other blogs are totally lacking from my own blog.

For example I like:
1. personalized blogs - picture in the heading, or avatar, etc.
2. label cloud or at least a list of the labels - it makes search easier.
3. humour!!!!
And many other things.
In the meantime my blog lacked:
1. avatar or personalized heading
2. label cloud or at least a list of the labels, even my labels are in chaotic state, some of them in Hungarian, some of them in English e.g.
3. any humorous remark. Apart from a pathetic joke of words...

So it's high time to change. I changed the colours of the blog, uploaded a photo, that's my avatar, personalized the heading, put the labels in order, but I have other plans as well.

Mona, one of my tatting friends from eTatters asked me about the meaning of the title of my blog. I replied the following:
"In Hungarian 'csipke' means lace, 'lélek' means soul. 'Csipkelelkű' is an adjective, it means a person 'whose soul is made of lace'. Well, this is not really a positive thing, we use it when we are talking about a hypersensitive person (about me e.g. :). The title 'Az én csipkés lelkem' has a similar meaning: 'My lacy soul'. I don't know if there is a similar phrase in English, if you know one, please let me know it!"
So I try to create an English title, but I don't have a good idea yet.

Post-Christmas Post - January

Motif #8-9 Snowflakes. The second one was my favourite this year. By the way it was very interesting to see all of the snowflakes of the years past. Normally they are in a big box with the other Christmas decorations, I don't see them everyday. After examining them I think they show some development.

Motif #11 Teddies. We attached them to the presents of our nieces and nephews.

Motif #12 A double-dimpled ring with two little flowers and some beads. Nice little piece, isn't it? (OK, the photo is not the best, but please, use your fantasy!)

I tried block-tatting, and it proved to be very simple. I made this bookmark to practise it.

I had a handful of little bells, I simply had to make them more showy.

New start, new techniques...

This picture shows the evolution of my Cluny leaves.... (the dimpled rings were made just for fun). It was not so complicated as I thought. Actually it was MORE complicated. Now I can tat almost good Cluny leaves (see the photos below), but I really do not know how to tat cluny leaves of the same form and size. I constructed a kind of weaving frame, it was a good idea, apart from the fact that it does not work.

I've done it!
I finished my challenge, here are my last five motifs:

Motif #21 A yellow square
Telling the truth I had no idea what would happen when I started this motif with the first little ring with the large picots, but the result is nice, at least I think so.

Motif #22-23 Beaded pendants
Well, it's maybe more beading than tatting... (I don't know what happened, the pendant on the left is greener in real life).

Motif #24-25 Edgings

The white one (from Elegant Tatting Patterns by Janet Carroll) will decorate a stole, the blue one (from here*) is made for a pillow-case. I hadn't time to sew these edgings on them, but I think it doesn't matter regarding the challenge.

So, I've done it...

...I am here again. As I wrote to Sharon my son is an angel. He is so good-tempered, after the baby-related evening rituals I have plenty of time to tat almost every night, but usually I'm too tired to update my blog.

Well, I know, this is not one of my best works. Actually I made a heap of mistakes. The first mistake was to buy this thread. It's just terrible. It's too rough (very hard to work with it), I don't like its colour, etc. Ok, it was very cheap (on sale, of course), but it can't be an excuse...

The pattern of the pendant (originally it isn't a pendant) is from Easy Tatting by Rozella F. Linden. I love those large picots! So I had to make the pair of earrings as well.
(My Mom's comment on these works: "Wow, they are LIKE REAL laces...!" She simply broke my heart. Maybe I will need an analyst...)

I needed a smaller version of this pattern (No. 1), the original size is too big to a lavender bag. I tatted six flowers instead of seven, and halved the number of the stitches, but I used the same thread size. The result (No. 2) is a smaller, still less pretty medallion. I really love the rustic laces, but that was a bit too much. I didn’t like it. Then I tried another thread size, and now I'm almost contented with it (No. 3).

Augusztus 19-én megszületett Hanna nevű unokahúgom, aki gyönyörű és nagyon okos, ami abból is látszik, hogy kivárta, amíg minden elkészül a fogadására, és csak akkor volt hajlandó megszületni.

A sapka bóti, a csipke az én művem. (Egyébként nem gondoltam, hogy ilyen rettenetesen nehéz Budapesten egy normális, idétlen macimintamentes babasapkát beszerezni).

I took a deep breath and joined 25 Motif Challenge. Here is my first motif, a necklace. Very simple motif connected by zig-zag chain.

Találtam egy kiváló könyvet a könyvtárban: Gazdáné Olosz Ella: Kézimunkázók könyve. Sajnos elég régen, ’86-ban adta ki a Kriterion, de talán antikváriumban…

Hát szóval van benne minden, mint a búcsúban, a szőnyegszövéstől a batikoláson át az ikebanáig (decoupage nincs), de a legjobb, hogy vagy nyolcvan oldalon tárgyalja a különböző csipkéket. Pár oldalt szán a hajócsipkének is, még a kettős csomó készítését is lerajzolja (más kérdés, hogy a kép alapján a dolog sokkal bnyolultabbnak tűnik, mint valójában). A stílusa viszont imádnivaló. Ilyeneket ír például: „Teljesen simának kell lennie (ti. a hajócskának), hogy munka közben könnyen sikuljon, s a hegyeinél levő nyílások annyira keskenyek legyenek, hogy a középen lévő átfúrt, alacsony orsóra csévéléskor éppen csak be lehessen a cérnát vezetni az alsó és felső borítólemez között, de a szál visszabomlása csak a mi akaratunktól függjön.”

Továbbá nem a halászhálóktól és a tengerészcsomóktól vezeti le a hajócsipke történetét, hanem a varrott csipke hurkolásos öltéseitől.

Mindenesetre még nagyobb kedvem lett más csipkék készítését is kipróbálni.

És ha már szóba került, legyen itt egy kép az első hajócskámról (továbbá egy megkezdett, de félbehagyott nyakláncról…):

Ennek a mintának egy változata. Pohár alá való, teáskannához túl kicsi. Szerintem szép lett. És kivételesen tényleg fontos, mert az éjszakára bekészített vizespohár foltot hagy a nachtkasznin.
